7. String-String Fruit
- Used by: Donquixote Doflamingo
- First Appearance: Final Fight with Luffy in Dressrosa
The String-String Fruit was already an overpowered Devil Fruit from the time it debuted, with nobody sure what Doflamingo had. The only thing people knew was that he could control people on the battlefield and make them injure their own. Revealing his powers to be all strings made Doffy terrifying, but when his Awakening came later in Dressrosa a whole other level of terror was unleashed. His Awakening allows Doflamingo to create string from other objects, with massive tendrils growing from the ground.
This also lets him create Black Knight clones, which are string copies of Doflamingo with his fighting abilities, controlled by him like puppets. These create problems for Law and Luffy in Dressrosa, and almost win the battle for him. Despite his String-String Fruit Awakening, it wasn’t enough to stop Luffy who pulls out Gear Fourth and defeats him with the Gum-Gum King Kong Gun. Despite the loss, Doffy still proves why he was strong enough to take over the country of Dressrosa with little to no resistance.
6. Mochi-Mochi Fruit
- Used by: Charlotte Katakuri
- First Appearance: Fighting Luffy in Mirro-World
Katakuri almost didn’t need to pull out his Awakening when he fought Luffy. This was probably one of the hardest fights he had come up against to date, with Katakuri’s Observation Haki mastery so far ahead that he could see Luffy’s moves before he even knew what they were. It wasn’t until Luffy finally started to hone in on his own Haki, plus the debut of Snakeman, that he was able to overcome the strongest son of Charlotte. Then Katakuri went all out with his Awakening to show Luffy there was still more he would have to overcome.
Katakuri’s Awakening allows him to form mochi rings in the air around him and turn the environment into mochi. Everything from turning the ground below into a mochi volcano to a gatling gun of mochi fists is possible. Despite their fight to the bitter end, Katakuri respects Luffy for being able to overcome his Haki and incredible Devil Fruit powers.
5. Magnet-Magnet Fruit
- Used by: Eustass Kid
- First Appearance: Law and Kid vs Big Mom in Wano
The fight in Onigashima was a buy two get one free deal on Devil Fruit Awakenings. First, the battle between Law and Kid against Big Mom gives both Worst Generation captains their own Awakenings, and then Luffy gets his against Kaido. Wins all around for a fantastic arc. Kid shows off a massive amount of power with his Magnet-Magnet Fruit already too, with his ability to control any sort of metal or otherwise magnetic objects. He’s able to fashion himself a massive metal arm, and can make projectiles out of the various scrap metal plus other weapons.
Kid’s Awakening allows him to take those magnetic powers and assign them to others though. With that, he assigns Big Mom as a magnetic pole, making everything around them fly towards her to encase her in metal. Kid can use these in different ways too, as he’s able to assign magnetic poles to different objects, allowing him to either force them together or apart depending on what he wants.
4. Op-Op Fruit
- Used by: Trafalgar D Law
- First Appearance: Law and Kid vs Big Mom in Wano
Trafalgar D Law is a long-running character in the Wano saga, and fans saw him go through massive changes with the Straw Hats. When his powers were first introduced with the Straw Hats’ escape from the Sabaody Archipelago, he almost seems like an overpowered monster with no weaknesses. Hell, when they escaped he didn’t even have to draw his sword, instead changing out Navy heads with cannonballs. Then it came to the battle against Big Mom and he had to pull out the Awakening.
Law’s biggest drawback, despite his massive powers, is that he has to have his enemy within a certain radius of his body. ROOM was perfectly capable of taking out massive crowds and smaller enemies, but now that he has KROOM, Law can go further. He uses it to extend his sword far down into the ground below the floating Onigashima, driving Big Mom deep into a magma chamber.
3. Human-Human Fruit, Model: Sun God Nika
- Used by: Monkey D Luffy
- First Appearance: Luffy vs Kaido over Onigashima
The hype to end all hype moments in One Piece. Luffy’s heart stops beating on Onigashima during his fight with Kaido, and everyone learns that the Gum-Gum Fruit has been a lie all along. The true Devil Fruit of Monkey D Luffy Awakens, revealing its identity as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Sun God Nika. Luffy assumes the form of the Sun God, with white hair and the ability to give everything around him rubbery properties. Luffy can control the environment and his body to fight any way he likes, no matter how ridiculous it may look.
When Luffy shows off those first big attacks in Onigashima, it’s the best possible showcase for what his new powers can do. He dubs the Awakening Gear Fifth, and uses it to mangle Kaido in every way possible. He becomes a massive balloon in the dragon’s belly, escaping with a slingshot through his eyes. Luffy adds insult to injury by using Kaido as a jumprope among other things before ending it all with a fist bigger than Onigashima crashing down on him. He pulls it out again later against Rob Lucci, and does just as equally ridiculous things with it.
2. Cat-Cat Fruit, Model: Leopard
- Used by: Rob Lucci
- First Appearance: Lucci vs. Gear 5 Luffy in Egghead Island
Rob Lucci was already super strong when he was first introduced in Enies Lobby. The man was such a vicious fighter that Luffy had to pull out both Gear Second and Gear Third when they were both barely ready for use in battle. Then he turns into his massive human-leopard hybrid form and becomes the vicious killing machine the World Government made him to be. It’s hard to improve on just how fierce Lucci already was before his Cat-Cat Fruit Awakens, but it happens.
Lucci becomes a lithe, lean killing machine of a monster in his awakening. The leopard beast form is leaner and more muscled than his regular, and the fur running from his back and shoulders resembles black flames. Combined with his Six Powers mastery, the Devil Fruit Awakening makes him a fierce opponent when he fights Luffy on Egghead Island.
1. Ox-Ox Fruit, Model: Giraffe
- Used by: Kaku
- First Appearance: Kaku vs Zoro in Egghead Island
The last Devil Fruit Awakening seen alongside Rob Lucci’s gave Kaku a much-needed upgrade. The Four-Sword Style giraffe man has long been the joke of Cipher Pol 0 for how ridiculous his transformation looks. Along with his long, square nose, it certainly isn’t a great sight to behold, but he makes it work out for him thanks to his Six Powers and Haki mastery. His Awakening form makes his giraffe hybrid much like Rob Lucci’s leopard hybrid, leaner and faster. While they’re able to make more flexible movements and get around faster, they still pack a massive punch, and Kaku puts it to use.
His lean form and long neck are kept, but he’s now provided a greater range of motion with his neck. He uses this to reinforce his nose with Armament Haki, making it into a more dangerous version of the Finger Gun utilized in the Six Powers. Kaku looks completely ridiculous, but he makes the case for giraffes as one of the more dangerous animals in the Zoan bestiary.
In the 1090 chapters of One Piece to release so far, these are all the Awakenings shown off in battle. There are a few other Zoan Fruit Awakenings that are seen in Impel Down, but it is noted that those are users who were lost to the Devil Fruit and are no longer able to change back. So, with the final saga underway and the Straw Hats leaving Egghead, more are likely to come along. With any luck, more of the Straw Hats will find some Awakenings for their Devil Fruits!
