These traits can include gills, fins, scales, and other features adapted for underwater life. One of the most crucial aspects of their biology is their ability to breathe and survive underwater. Fish-Men possess gills near their necks, but they also have the impressive ability of voice modulation to speak to humans.
Despite their underwater respiration abilities, Fish-Men also possess lungs. This enables them to breathe on land like humans. This duality in their respiratory system allows them to transition between the ocean depths and the surface world.
Where Do The Fishmen Come From?
FishMen predominantly reside in an underwater civilization called Fish-Man Island, located in the New World. The island is made up of coral and giant bubbles that allow air-breathing individuals to visit.
Diversity Among Fish-men
Fish-Men come in various shapes, sizes, and appearances, similar to fish and other aquatic creatures. Some resemble sharks, octopuses, fish, and other marine life. Also, Fish-Men reproduce in a manner similar to humans, and they can have offspring with humans, resulting in hybrid individuals. One example is Hatchan, a Fish-Man who has an octopus-like appearance due to his hybrid lineage.
Fish-Man Island
Fish-Man Island is a vibrant and technologically advanced underwater civilization in the New World of the One Piece world. Surrounded by a massive bubble that sustains an air-filled environment, Fish-Man Island allows surface-dwelling visitors to explore its wonders. The island is a breathtaking spectacle of colorful coral reefs, floating underwater foliage, and elaborate architecture.
Ruled by the wise and honorable king Neptune, the island has made strides toward equality and understanding between Fish-Men and humans. At the heart of the island lies the majestic Ryugu Palace, Neptune’s residence and the seat of power. Additionally, the island boasts the enchanting Mermaid Cove, home to the beautiful Mermaid Princess, Shirahoshi. The island’s residents practice Fish-Man Karate, a unique martial art known for its impressive strength and skill.

Fishmen Special Abilities
As described, the Fishmen have a variety of characteristics both physically and culturally. This gave them an edge in the One Piece Universe. On top of having gills and lungs – to traverse different kinds of terrain without losing their breath – they are able to do quite a few things that the typical land-dweller can’t.
Enhanced Strength
Fish-Men are known for their physical strength, often surpassing that of regular humans. This enhanced strength is attributed to their underwater habitat and their ability to adapt to the pressures and conditions of the deep sea. Designed to withstand the immense pressure of the ocean depths, the Fish-men are more durable and resilient compared to regular humans. Additionally, their stamina and endurance are well-suited for prolonged underwater activities.
Health and Healing

Jinbe’s mastery over Fish-Man Karate allows him to effectively fight both underwater and on land. This is something all fighters in their realm aspire to achieve. He is also an excellent tactician and has served as a trusted ally of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Before joining the Straw Hat crew, Jinbe was a member of the Warlords of the Sea, a group of powerful pirates affiliated with the World Government. He held this position due to his strength, reputation, and influence as a former captain of the Sun Pirates.
Fisher Tiger
Tiger was a formidable warrior and a legendary figure among Fish-Men. He was the founder and former captain of the Sun Pirates, a powerful pirate crew. Despite his hatred for humans due to the suffering he endured as a slave, he was a force to be reckoned with in battle.
Fisher Tiger is a significant and legendary character in the One Piece world. He has only appeared in flashbacks and has passed away before the main events of the story take place. Tiger’s actions and legacy have had a profound impact on the narrative. His actions inspired countless Fish-Men and slaves to seek freedom and equality. This willingness to sacrifice himself for the betterment of his people and the oppressed left a lasting impact on Fish-Man Island and beyond.
Arlong
Arlong was another prominent Fish-Man known for his strength and cunning. He was the leader of the Arlong Pirates and possessed incredible fighting abilities, particularly with his powerful jaw strength. Arlong is a significant antagonist in the One Piece universe and plays a crucial role in the early story arcs of the series. He is a powerful Fish-Man and the main antagonistic character of the Arlong Park Arc. This all takes place in the East Blue, the first of the four seas in the Grand Line.
Hody Jones
Hody Jones was the primary antagonist in the Fish-Man Island Arc. As captain of the New Fish-Man Pirates, he consumed energy steroids to enhance his strength further, making him a formidable opponent. His very presence creates a paradigm shift between humans, fish-men, and merfolk.
Vander Decken IX
Vander Decken IX, while not primarily known for his physical strength, is an antagonist in One Piece, the captain of the Flying Pirates. He possesses the Mato Mato no Mi Devil Fruit, allowing him to mark targets with homing abilities. He obsessively pursues Princess Shirahoshi, seeking her hand in marriage despite her rejection.

The prolonged neglect of the Fish-Man District further propagated this deep-seated hatred, passing it down to successive generations. The hope for reconciliation seems distant as long as this cycle of resentment persists among certain factions of the Fish-Men population.
