We’ve talked about Eustass Kid extensively, so One Piece’s Jiki Jiki no Mi needs a review. Sometimes, One Piece’s basket of Devil Fruit feels like a reflective homage to all the superpowers found in the multiverse. That’s not by mistake either. In many ways, One Piece can be summed up as an epic involving pirates with superpowers. Yes, we’re aware it’s more complicated than that, but the point is nevertheless clear. So, what is the Jiki Jiki no Mi in One Piece? Why all the talk about superpowers and references? Let’s get into it.
Another Unique Style: What Does The Jiki Jiki no Mi Actually Look Like?
The Jiki Jiki no Mi or The Magnet-Magnet Fruit has a distinctive appearance, resembling a cluster of silver spheres with a winding yellow vine encircling them. Most fans agree that it looks a lot like a bunch of grapes. Each sphere features a tiny jagged appendage, reminiscent of a lightning bolt extending from it. It kind of looks like something you’d see on the face of a Pokemon gym badge if we’re being honest. Notably, the fruit’s stem is equally jagged, which sort of accents the fruit like a sundae cherry.
Devil Fruit Abilities
The core ability of the Jiki Jiki no Mi grants its user the power to manipulate magnetism at will. This ability has a wide range of applications, making it a hell of a force to be reckoned with. One can generate a powerful magnetic field, allowing them to attract metal objects and substances toward the conjuring point. This power is particularly useful in combat, but first, let’s take a look at the guy who took a bite.
One Piece’s Childish Magneto: Who is Eustass Kid?
In one of our first pieces titled Is Captain Kid Dead in One Piece?, we take a deep look at this member of the “Worst Generation.” So, we’ll be very brief to save you time. Eustass “Captain” Kid hails from the South Blue and is on record as the captain of the fearsome Kid Pirates. At least… he was. His utilization of the Jiki Jiki no Mi was so advanced that he basically ignores Haki altogether. Kid’s bounty stood at an astounding Beli 315,000,000. This substantial bounty was primarily a result of the significant civilian casualties attributed to him and his crew, surpassing even weathered pirates’ bounty in days past. All while using the Jiki Jiki no Mi. But how has it been utilized specifically?
Basic But Effective
Through the power of repulsion, the user has the ability to redirect metal projectiles, sending them back toward their origin and turning them against the attacker. One could theoretically turn simple cutlery into a ballistic missile. Conversely, by employing attraction, the user can disarm opponents by drawing their weapons toward their own body, leaving those opponents defenseless. The average Marine would be rendered helpless without a special ability beyond firepower.
Hulk Smash: What is Eustass Kid’s “Punk Gibson” ?
Kid’s distinctive maneuver, his trademark move, involves drawing an assortment of metal fragments toward one of his arms to fashion a colossal makeshift limb. It kind of resembles that green Hulk fist you’d see as a kid, but were too poor to buy. Anyway, with this formidable appendage, he delivers a crushing blow to his foe. Kid initially exhibited this attack during his encounter on the Sabaody Archipelago, where he engaged the Marines in a fierce battle.
The Gift Of Flight
Additionally, the user can utilize attraction to draw themselves toward substantial metal objects such as ships, enabling a form of aerial travel reminiscent of flight. Think of Magneto when he finally discovers how he can manipulate fields in order to float. Or, we can just take a look at Eustass Kid who managed to launch Big Mom into the air. Anyone close enough to the story knows this is no small feat.
The Awakening Of The Jiki Jiki no Mi
This sort of explains why Kid is solely reliant on his devil fruit to an extent. Once the awakening is attained, the user gains the ability to transform various objects, including living beings, into magnets by assigning them specific currents, polarities, and patterns. This awakened state opens up potential applications that no longer hinge on the user’s need for metal from their surroundings, reducing the impact of that particular weakness to a certain degree. Speaking of weaknesses, does the Jiki Jiki no Mi have any of note?
Losing Power
The effectiveness of this fruit in combat relies heavily on the presence of an adequate amount of metal in the user’s vicinity. Without awakening: no metal means no power. A rubber world would turn you into a paperweight. In the world of One Piece, this isn’t a complete impossibility.
Another recognized vulnerability is that the magnetic forces used to manipulate larger metal structures may wane if the user sustains substantial damage themselves. This can be compared to other Paramecia-style fruit wielders who get disarmed with a loss of focus. Interestingly, the fruit’s abilities seem to have no impact on Pacifista despite their metallic composition, for reasons yet unknown. Some theorize it has to do with Kid’s lack of knowledge, rendering him incapable of identifying the substances necessary to fend them off.
The Jiki Jiki no Mi: A Fruit To Remember
Eustass Kid’s Jiki Jiki no Mi grants him a unique and versatile set of abilities centered around magnetism and metal manipulation. This Devil Fruit has made Kid a notorious entity in the One Piece world. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown if we will see the likes of this magnetic snack ever again. At least, not in the form that we know and love. There aren’t a lot of devil fruits in One Piece that can make a fan feel nostalgic. Somehow, some way, The Jiki Jiki no Mi tugged on the iron in our hearts. For now, it will be forever missed.
