One Piece returns to Egghead Island after quite some time away in chapter 1089 this week. So, after the fall of a hero last week and Sabo’s story of Marijoa’s horror, they’ve had a lot going on in the meantime. So, time to explore the new chapter, slicing everything up to analyze the crap out of whatever possible in our One Piece Chapter 1089 review!
It shouldn’t have to be said, but spoilers ahead for anyone that hasn’t read One Piece chapter 1089 yet. That’s the only warning!
Is Garp Dead in One Piece?
As of right now, Garp’s official status is unknown. Everything at his battle on Fullalead Island indicated he was dead at the hands of Blackbeard’s crew. Not entirely the crew, but the lead officers between Shiryu of the Rain and Kuzan, Garp’s former apprentice. His last appearance onscreen was with a massive icicle growing from his body on the ground. That said, no death in One Piece is ever official unless they’re confirmed dead by a friend immediately after, and Garp was laughing until that final panel. Some theories to support this.
- Kuzan has pulled the “freeze a character and play dead until they defrost” card a few times now. It’s not above suspicion that he did this with his mentor, and may insist on disposing of Garp himself to Cross Guild.
- Unless outright stated to be killed, most everyone survives. Jaguar D Saul, Pell, and Kuma among others. Not to mention all the headlines only say that Garp disappeared in Fullalead, not that he died. They may keep him alive to bargain with Cross Guild.
What Happens in One Piece Chapter 1089?
A whole load of events, as a world-spanning montage covers the effects of Lulusia’s erasure and Garp’s defeat. There’s a massive, resounding earthquake that’s felt around the world, shaking everything from Water 7 to Luffy’s home of Windmill Village. Meanwhile, the Navy has surrounded Egghead Island with a larger fleet than anyone has ever seen. York has led them there, and Kizaru is overseeing the operation alongside one of the Gorosei. It’s a terrifying set of foes, and they have several Vice-Admirals beneath them with quite a few warships too. By the end of their talk with York though, the Straw Hats have hunted the traitor down.
What Happened to Lulusia?
So it’s established that it was Imu that destroyed Lulusia, but now the damage of their attack is finally shown in full. It’s still unknown what the attack even was, just that they commanded it to happen, but now there’s a massive, gaping hole in the middle of the ocean. Thanks to the black-and-white art, it’s hard to tell if water is falling in or if there’s just a bare hole, but nonetheless, it’s terrifying to see that amount of power.
Does Lulusia Cause the Earthquake?
Oh hell yeah, it does. Lulusia is ground zero for the earthquake as well as the rising sea level. After the nation was wiped out, the sea level the entire world round rises by one meter or so instantly. beaches and some cities are wiped out almost instantaneously, with few survivors.
The Straw Hats are Surrounded
It’s been a long, long time since the Straw Hats were last seen on Egghead Island. Now they’re surrounded on Egghead by a force larger than any Buster Call the Navy has ever seen though. Kizaru, Jay Garcia Saturn of the Gorosei, and all of the Vice-Admirals under them pose such a stupidly massive threat any other team would call it quits immediately. The Straw Hats still have a lot of plans though, and they’re no ordinary pirates.
Kizaru and Sentomaru
There’s not a whole lot of background on these two yet but we do know that Kizaru got his Devil Fruit powers later in life. There are flashbacks to him learning to use his powers along with Vegapunk and a young Sentomaru, and Sentomaru flat-out tells him they used his powers for the Pacifista’s lasers. Their history apparently goes back further than anybody besides Vegapunk knows, so hopefully more is explored before the end.
York Begs for Her Life
Since York was the one to sell out the Gorosei, she probably should have known it would backfire. As they even tell her while she begs for her life, insisting that she didn’t study the Void Century, “You’re still Vegapunk”. It’s a cold admission, and the Gorosei at first want to wipe Egghead Island off the map. They’re only dissuaded by the value of the research there. It’s not clear if they plan to go back on their promise again, but would anyone put it past the Gorosei to rescind a promise they made? York likely won’t get the Celestial Dragon title she eventually bargains for, but she’ll be lucky to survive at all.
The Straw Hats are Back
As York is begging for her life, the Gorosei hear her begin to scream over the Transponder Snail. They don’t know it from where they are, but the Straw Hats have burst in while York tells them to get her while she’s still alive. There’s a question as to if the Straw Hats just made it there or if they were already, as Usopp is listening in pretty closely. It’s also good to see they’re still in the alliance with CP0 since Rob Lucci is in the background. Sanji seems to be the only one enjoying his time on Egghead.
One Piece Theories Corner
So, with the chapter’s end on the Straw Hats finding York speaking with the Gorosei, what’s to come? Egghead is barrelling toward the conclusion hard, and it’s not letting up any time soon. with how things are going. The news of Garp’s death is likely to give Luffy a jump, rushing him ever closer to a confrontation with Blackbeard’s crew.
Kuma is still climbing up the Red Line to Sacred Marijoa, but unlike what the Revolutionaries think, he’s not returning there. Kuma’s destination is none other than Egghead Island. When Sentomaru made the call for every Pacifista to protect the Straw Hats, Kuma got the order. Now, all that stands in his path from Kamabakka Kingdom to Egghead is the Red Line.
So, not a whole lot of developments other than the fallout of Lulusia, the earthquake, and the Straw Hats catching York. We’re only just getting back to the Strawhat Pirates in Egghead Island, so there’s still a lot to happen as the last part of this arc plays out. It’s going to be interesting to see if CP0 revokes the World Government, but it remains to be seen. Either way, One Piece is certainly about to heat up. Stay tuned for a review of the new chapters as they drop!
