What Happens in One Piece Chapter 1091
It’s been two weeks since 1090, so for a refresher, the Marines are currently having a standoff with the Straw Hats at Egghead. Now, Kizaru has cornered Sentomaru while the Vice-Admirals fight the Sea Beast Weapons. Despite his best efforts, Sentomaru faces defeat as Kizaru takes his authority chip, calling off the Pacifistas. There’s a brief flashback of Sentomaru first meeting Vegapunk and Kizaru as a child, and it’s sad to see how Kizaru would so coldly kill someone who was a friend.
Meanwhile, in the Labophase, the Straw Hats are trying to figure out an escape. Most are waiting back with Stella while Lilith, Luffy, and Bonney use the Mechapunk to bring Thousand Sunny back to the others. In the lab, Usopp is keeping an eye on things while the others formulate escape routes now that Kizaru is about to get in. Things only get worse when Lucci goes right back to his original mission of trying to kill Vegapunk. Stussy jumps in front, saving Vegapunk but taking a nasty hit in the process. Now the Straw Hats are facing threats from within and outside as they just try to get out of Egghead to make it to Elbaph.
Kizaru and Sentomaru
The small backstory bits given about Sentomaru, Kizaru, and Vegapunk have been slowly revealing their relationship. Showing that Vegapunk and Kizaru just met a young Sentomaru in their travels gives it an even more tragic flair with their fight currently happening. Despite their relationship, Kizaru even first honing his powers alongside them when he ate his Devil Fruit, Sentomaru is seemingly killed by the Admiral. Kizaru wastes no time glinting into the labophase, and immediately sees Luffy and the Thousand Sunny making their escape.
Pacifista Switch Sides
By far the worst outcome for the Straw Hats possible. Now that Sentomaru is gone Kizaru holds his authority chip for the Pacifistas! The weapons of destruction are back in Navy hands, and Kizaru is free to go after the Straw Hats. The laser defense system surrounding the labophase isn’t going to do anything against Kizaru, whose Glint-Glint Fruit abilities put him almost immediately through onto the other side. Parallels with the Sabaody Archipelago arc are pointed out by Brook, with a healthy sense of danger for Kizaru.
Rob Lucci Attacks
Lucci has been in and out of the background this whole time since the Seraphim turned on them. It seems his brief team-up with Luffy was only for convenience. The Cipher Pol 0 leader immediately attacks Vegapunk once Sentomaru is down, hitting Stussy instead. Now Kizaru attacks from the outside while Lucci fights the Straw Hats inside. Lucci attacks again, promising that between the two of them, everyone will die. Kaku seems pretty taken aback by everything, and Lucci last chapter obviously was hiding his plans from his partner. Seems a bit strange that he wouldn’t include him. Lucci still takes out Stussy in the process of attacking Vegapunk. Since he knows she’s on their side, he won’t hold back from eliminating his former colleague.
Now the Stella and Straw Hats have to make a run to meet somewhere in the middle. The Straw Hats in the lab make a tough match for Lucci, so things could go either way. The most important thing right now is escaping the island with Vegapunk still alive.
Will Luffy Fight Kizaru?
The other surprising (or not) moment to come out of this chapter. Despite the lingering memories of Sabaody and warnings of his fellow Straw Hats, Luffy launches himself right at Kizaru. He lands a hit with a Haki-coated kick, and Kizaru notes the same situation happening two years before. Luffy’s smile as he replies how he’s a hundred times stronger now is all the proof that chapter 1092 is about to have a badass battle. Other than Lucci, nobody outside of Wano has encountered Gear Five Luffy. Even then they were Zoan users, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against a Logia type. He was able to control the lightning at Onigashima, so perhaps Gear Five will let Luffy control the light powers of Kizaru as well.
There’s a huge fight coming up, with one hell of an incident for the Straw Hat Pirates to escape from. At the beginning of Egghead Island, there was a narrative note that said things would change historically here overnight. It seems that’s about to happen, and Egghead Island is about to near the climax of the arc. One Piece Chapter 1091 is pulling off a great lead-up in the final saga, and more action is going to make this a treat to read from start to finish once it’s done.
