SPOILERS AHEAD
Episode 1066 of One Piece draws another decisive battle around Onigashima to a close with Kid and Law going on the offensive against Big Mom, uncovering some surprising new abilities along the way. So, with the showcase of Devil Fruit awakenings for these two Worst Generation members, what can we expect to see from Devil Fruits in the episodes to come?
The Alliance between the Straw Hats, Heart Pirates, Kid Pirates, Minks, and Samurai has. finally come to the final phase of their plan, with a raid on the island of Onigashima where two Emperors, Kaido and Big Mom, are celebrating with their respective crews. As always in Shonen anime, things get a little wild and fights break out between our heroes and the big villains of the arc, with everyone split off into their own battles.
Major Fights of Onigashima
- Sanji vs. Queen- Sanji won with a newfound resolve and fire, kicking Queen to the curb with an explosive new move while embracing his role as one wing of the future King of the Pirates. Winner: Sanji.
- Zoro vs. King- Zoro defeated Kaido’s first mate, the Lunarian named King by embracing his hatred and ability to fight as Luffy’s other wing, taking on a new title and move of the same name: King of Hell. Winner: Zoro.
- Kid and Law vs. Big Mom: Kid and Law take the win in a desperate last-minute act.
- Luffy vs. Kaido: In progress as Luffy must make his way up to Kaido once more after being knocked off the floating island of Onigashima during their fight. Kaido assumes victory currently, but Luffy has some power remaining for a last-ditch effort in Gear Four…
The Three Types of Devil Fruits
- Paramecia- Gives the user power to transform into most inorganic materials or manipulate their bodies in some strange way. An example would be Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit, which makes his entire body rubber.
- Logia- Allows the user to turn into and control something, usually an organic material such as Kuzan’s Chilly-Chilly Fruit or Smoker’s Smoke-Smoke Fruit.
- Zoan- Allows the user to transform into animals and on some occasions like Chopper, humans. The most prominent examples are CP-0 members Rob Lucci and Kaku. Mythical types also happen, most recently seen with Yamato and Kaido.
Awakenings have been shown before in One Piece, though for now we’ve only seen Paramecia-type awakenings (though that will change soon). These Devil Fruits allow their users to control some power or make permanent changes to their body, such as Don Quixote Doflamingo did at the end of the Dressrosa arc with his String-String Fruit powers, where he turned the land into threads he could control from a distance without being attached.
Eustass Kid
- Captain of the Kid Pirates, member of Worst Generation, and overall jerk.
- Devil Fruit and Powers- Magnet Magnet Fruit, allows him to control metal by manipulating his magnetic forcefield. Uses his powers to create a prosthetic right arm for himself as well as for his notorious slaughter and pillaging of islands along the Grand Line.
Now, both Eustass Kid and Trafalgar D Water-Law have awakened their fruits, with Kid invoking his magnetic powers on a living target of his choosing, as opposed to just manipulating the magnetic objects already around him. While he made everything possible fly to crush Big Mom from all sides, the powers of Law and his Op-Op Fruit were needed to bring the Emperor down.

- Captain of the Heart Pirates, member of Worst Generation, the Surgeon of Death.
- Devil Fruit and Ability: Op-Op Fruit. Allows him to manipulate all matter within a given space which he calls ROOM. He combines this with his medical knowledge to heal or fight whoever he decides to use it on.
Law’s ROOM ability seemed overpowered when introduced, able to heal even the worst wounds and successfully use his medical knowledge to the full extent. That’s not to mention the combat extent of his power, which can wipe out crowds of cannon fodder in moments by just turning their bullets back at them. Now his Awakening lets him move his ROOM wherever he wants, instead of limiting it to the immediate area around himself. Without the weakness of limited range bringing him into close combat, he gains a safe distance and sets a room up inside Big Mom, helping to take her out along with Kid’s Awakened Devil Fruit.
That’s three Devil Fruit Awakenings we’ve seen up to now, and all are Paramecia types, so we still have no clue what Zoan or Logia types could bring to the table. Until the upcoming finale of Luffy vs. Kaido and the introduction of Luffy’s Gear Five, along with the reveal of his Gum-Gum Fruit’s true identity and type, leading to a showcase of Looney-Tunes antics that will leave fans smiling.
The New World still has plenty of Devil Fruits yet to be seen, and even more we’ve seen that are still shrouded in mystery. With thousands of possibilities for new, more ridiculous abilities yet to come in this last stretch of the New World, where only the strongest have managed to survive, creator Eichiro Oda is sure to have some massive reveals in the final stretch of One Piece!
