There are a bunch of Marines who decided to turn against the World Government for multiple reasons, such as having a moral sense of justice. These Former Marines are very strong because they were part of such a powerful organization. Curious as to which of these traitors ended up being a loss for the World Government? Here’s a ranked list.
4. X Drake
As the captain of the Marine Special unit SWORD, ‘Reg Flag’ X Drake was initially a pirate who joined the Marines after fleeing from the Barrel Pirates. In the Marines, he held the position of Rear Admiral. He acted as a spy amongst the pirates on the order of the Marines. Drake later betrayed the Marines, becoming a pirate and forming his own crew after joining the Worst Generation.
He has incredible strength and defense abilities. X Drake knocked a Pacifista into a building with just two hits. He has a great tolerance for pain and is also a smart individual, successfully fooling people around him and going undercover. X Drake wields two weapons: A four-bladed axe, and a Rapier. He is also the user of the Ryu Ryu no Mi, which is an Ancient Zoan-type fruit that turns him into an Allosaurus or a human and Allosaurus hybrid. Plus, X Drake gains increased strength in his physical abilities. Additionally, he possesses the Busoshoku Haki and the Kenbunshoku Haki.
3. Saul
Jaguar D. Saul is a giant and a former Vice Admiral for the Marines. Saul questioned the orders of his commanding officer and did not understand the purpose of the Ohara Massacre. Also, he turned his back on the Marines by attempting to save Nico Robin from the buster call that was responsible for the murders in Ohara. Kuzan froze Saul to stop him from escaping with Nico. He also saved the knowledge the Marines wanted to destroy. Alongside other giants, he retrieved the books the scholars of Ohara had thrown into the lake.
Saul is a Giant, which makes him a powerful fighter. He possesses an insane amount of strength, even for a giant, and can easily lift heavy objects. For example, Saul can easily lift a Buster Call Ship and slam it down. He has impressive durability in battles and he is resilient to injuries. After a cannonball hits him, he casually brushes off any remains. His large size gives him an advantage over his enemies. It can also intimidate his opponents. He has the ability to use Haki, like every Vice Admiral. This alone makes him a powerful opponent.
2. Vergo
“Demon Bamboo” Vergo was a Marine Vice Admiral. He is a sinister individual who murdered his own Marine subordinates. He reflects his cruelty in his fighting style by frequently brutalizing his opponents. Initially, Vergo was one of the four elite officers of the Donquixote Pirates who later joined the Marines, under the command of Doflamingo. He worked as a spy for the Donquixote Pirates and assisted Doflamingo in his criminal activities by sharing sensitive information and covering up the actions of the Donquixote Pirates. Also, he could do this due to his influential and powerful position as the head of the G-5.
His cruel personality makes him a strong fighter, as nothing is holding him back from injuring his opponents. He can defend himself against strong attacks such as Law’s Counter Shock. Vergo also has great resilience and endurance. He had access to the Rokushiki martial arts style. He can use Busoshoku Haki and Kenbunshoku Haki. In addition the former admiral is skilled in the Armament Haki. He can harden himself and his bamboo stick and attack his opponents with greatly aggressive power. He can use a rifle, but he mostly carries a bamboo stick, which he uses as a weapon such as shooting bullets that cause massive explosions.
1. Kuzan
One of the Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates, Kuzan is a former Marine Admiral. He is also known by his former alias, Aokiji. He fought with Sakazuki for the position of Fleet Admiral. Which shows how powerful he is. Kuzan competed because he did not want Admiral Akainu to become the Fleet Admiral. Aokiji believed in protecting innocent people and the Principle of justice. Meanwhile, Sakazuki holds more ruthless beliefs and will take any action necessary to ensure the achievement of justice. Both the Admirals fought in a ten-day-long battle in which Sakazuki emerged victorious. Kuzan resigned from the Marines after he lost. Kuzan was unwilling to work under someone whose values on justice did not align with his own.
He has developed his strength over the years through intense training. He has a massive punching power and used battleships to increase the force of his punches. His power was almost on the level of his mentor, Monkey D. Garp. Aokiji has impressive durability, fighting against Akainu for ten days once. He is a fighter with incredible speed and can react quickly to block attacks. He is a user of the Hie Hie no Mi which is a Logia-type Devil Fruit. The fruit allows him to create, control, and transform his body into ice. Kuzan creates weapons from ice such as swords and spears. He has good defensive abilities as he can freeze his enemies. He is also a skilled Haki user and he has mastered all three Hakis.
Looking Back
There are Marines who do not agree with the World Government’s agenda and oppose the Government with small actions. However, very few of these Marines have outright betrayed the Marines. All of these Former Marines have different reasons to leave the Marines. We can expect more people to turn their backs to the Marines in the future but right now only these few ballsy people have acted out. It is surprising that in an organization as evil as the Marines, there are not many people within the organization who are praying for the downfall of the Marines and the World Government.
