The main goal of Monkey D. Luffy as well as various other pirates in the series, is to be the Pirate King. But what exactly does this goal mean? Well, it means different things for different people, but for the most part it means being the strongest and the freest on the seas. For many characters, it means being able to do what you want, when you want. If anyone tries to stop you, you are strong enough to stop them.
For others, being the pirate king is all about power. Power over others and the power to take what you want when you want it. Several nobles and interesting pirates have had their eyes on becoming The Pirate King. However, there are some who shouldn’t take the title. Here are some pirates who shouldn’t become the king of the pirates.
7. Doflamingo Donquixote
While he might be one of the greatest One Piece villains to ever menace the Straw Hats and their allies, he doesn’t deserve to be the next Pirate King. He might be a powerful captain with the Donquixote Pirates. He might have been a Warlord of the Sea. But being the King just isn’t going to work out. After all, he was king before.
He was a complete tyrant when he ruled over the Kingdom of Dressrosa, ruling over the kingdom with an iron fist for nearly a decade. If he becomes pirate king then he will treat the rest of the world the same way. Well, at least the parts of the world he keeps around. Because he has declared that he does want to destroy the world!
6. Hody Jones
This antagonist was extremely prejudiced towards humans. Hody Jones plunged Fish-Man Island into war, all because he wanted to prove his race was superior. He even made plans to attack the World Government itself! Plus, as the battle on Fish-Man Island heated up, he even tried to destroy the island.
Even though his own crew and the people he was fighting for were on it. He would have rather seen them all dead before accepting any type of coexistence. If he became the Pirate King, then he would likely corrupt the position. He’d make all humans slaves or worse, and that is a future that many people don’t want to see.
5. Don Krieg
The captain of the Krieg Pirates. Don Krieg is actually an interesting character. He is one of the few antagonists without Devil Fruit powers or Haki. Instead, he fights using powered armor and his raw strength. Don Krieg was able to hold his own against Luffy and even make it to the New World for a time. But despite these strengths, he wouldn’t be a good Pirate King.
Don Krieg doesn’t care about his crew. He will do the bare minimum for them because he knows he can’t sail alone, but he won’t do anything else. If the true Pirate King has all the qualities that Gol D Roger once had, then caring about your crew is one that Don Krieg lacks.
4. Big Mom
Big Mom is one of the few characters who actually encountered and fought Gol D. Roger. She was part of the Rocks Pirates at the time, and would later become one of the Four Emperors. She also has access to all three forms of Haki, and her Devil Fruit allows her to manipulate the souls of people who fear her.
However, her power over souls has a dark secret. She can take from the souls and lifespans of others in order to extend her own life. If she were to become the Pirate King, then she would likely have the entire world do this. She’d be a tyrant for centuries, and would probably also have a massive demand for sweets as well.
3. Kaido
Another member of the Rocks pirates who had dealings with Gol D. Roger, Kaido is one of the strongest creatures in the world. He is the captain of the Beast Pirates, holds a bounty of nearly 5 billion berries, and can also turn into a massive dragon. He is incredibly strong, and like Doflamingo Donquixote, he rules over a kingdom. His ruling over Wano shows how he would treat the world if he became Pirate King.
The people under him have suffered greatly because of his tyrannical rule. Especially because Kaido has grown bored of the current world and seeks a major war. Plus he is willing to do whatever he has to do to start that war. If he becomes the Pirate King, he’d have the power to make some terrible changes.
2. Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)
Despite Whitebeard himself stating that Blackbeard would never be able to live up to Roger’s legacy, Blackbeard wants to become King. He simply lusts for power and wants more in order to be the strongest in the world. He is a Yonko, and the only character in the series to possess two Devil Fruits.
With two of the most powerful Devil Fruits in existence on his side, he’s got that power. But he wants more, and with the terrible actions he has pulled so far, he would make a terrible Pirate King. Blackbeard is simply too cruel to be the true pirate king, but he will keep trying. This will make his actions in the Final Saga all the more interesting.
1. Buggy The Clown
He’s a Yonko. He’s the president of the Cross Guild. He was a Warlord of the Sea. He even was a part of Gol. D. Roger’s crew! But despite all of these impressive titles, Buggy the Clown would be a terrible Pirate King. Buggy is simply extremely lucky. He tends to fall into the right places at the right times, benefiting from the work of others.
While he does have some skills and a cunning mind, his cowardice tends to be his undoing. He wouldn’t know what to do with the power of a Pirate King. Which makes his ascension to the top all the more unlikely.
