9. Nico Robin
Nico Robin is the Straw Hat Pirates’ archaeologist, recognized for her tragic backstory and her skill in deciphering Poneglyphs. Robin encountered Sabo when Bartholomew Kuma used his Devil fruit to send her to the Revolutionary Army on Tequila Wolf. The characters became friendly with each other during the time skip. They met again in Dressrosa. Sabo and Robin have exchanged stories, and she discovered their mutual connection with Luffy. Both characters are renowned for challenging and opposing the governing forces of the world. Hence, it is only natural for them to get along well! As their ideals and beliefs are quite similar.
8. Curly Dadan
As a friend of Monkey D. Garp, she received the task of looking after Luffy, Ace, and eventually Sabo. Initially, she was skeptical of Sabo considering his background. However, Dadan soon warmed up to him and provided equal support and guidance to Sabo as she did to Ace and Luffy. Naturally, as Sabo’s caretaker, she cared for him despite her ill temper. She felt sadness upon learning about Sabo’s supposed death. However, she cried her eyes out when she found out that Sabo was still alive. Their relationship is heartwarming and it also shaped Sabo’s personality.
7. The Revolutionary Army Commanders
Despite being their senior, Sabo has a casual relationship with the Revolutionary Army Commanders. The commanders, who are Karasu, Belo, Betty, and Morley, share such a relationship with Sabo as they are part of the same team. When informed by Lindbergh that they will be late to Dragon’s mobilization conference, Sabo showcased their good-natured relationship as he only expressed his worry over their safety. Another occasion where Sabo worried about the commanders’ safety was during a meeting with Monkey D. Dragon and Emporio Ivankov witnessing Imu’s sitting of the Empty Throne. He excluded the commanders because he did not want to risk their lives.
6. Bartholomew Kuma
Propaganda by the World Government has portrayed Bartholomew Kuma as an extremely vicious pirate. However, Kuma is a very kind individual. His relationship with Sabo acts as proof of that. Kuma came across Sabo when the latter was very young. Sabo received training from Kuma forming a relationship of apprentice and master amongst them. Upon discovering that Kuma had been enslaved by the Celestial Dragons in Mary Geoise, Sabo was devastated. Sabo tried to alter the Revolutionary Army’s mission in an attempt to recuse Kuma.
5. Hack
The Japanese soldierfish fish-man is a member of the Revolutionary Army and by extension Sabo’s colleague. Sabo studied martial arts under Hack. However, as an already trained fighter, there was not much that Hack could teach Sabo. They continued to work closely together in the Revolutionary Army. As is common in every friendship, Hack has occasionally felt frustrated with Sabo for leaving his post during missions. Hack also got angry with Sabo when Sabo hung up on the fish man. These moments only show how strong their bond of friendship is.
4. Koala
As another member of the Revolutionary Army, Koala shares a close bond with Sabo. They have worked together since Sabo was a teenager. She knows him very closely and is even aware of his relationship with Luffy and Ace. Sabo has also shared his guilt for not being at Marineford and as a result, being unable to save Ace. Similar to Hack, Koala has also experienced frustration with Sabo for abandoning his post. She also gets frustrated with him on multiple occasions. Regardless of that, Sabo holds a soft spot in Koala’s heart as she was crying when she thought he was about to die. They have a very wholesome and cute relationship.
3. Monkey D. Dragon
Impressed by Sabo’s hatred of the nobility, the leader of the Revolutionary Army took him under his care. Dragon rescued Sabo when his ship was destroyed by a World Noble. Dragon personally trained Sabo. Despite being Sabo’s superior, Dragon acts more like his adopted father. This is ironic since Sabo is also the adopted brother of Luffy.
2. Portgas D. Ace
Sabo and Ace met as children and since then their bond has been wholesome. They are immensely close friends and sworn brothers. Sabo was even willing to let go of his dreams to save Ace and Luffy from his father’s wrath. He deeply regrets not being able to save Ace and constantly agonizes over his death. He even visited Ace’s grave showing how deep their bond was. Another thing that shows the depth of their bond is Sabo’s aim to achieve Ace’s Devil fruit and how he was able to succeed in his goal. He did not react nicely when people insulted Ace.
1. Monkey D. Luffy
Interestingly, when Sabo first encountered Luffy, he aimed to kill Luffy to protect his secret. However, their bond grew into one of the brothers and Sabo acted like a kinder elder brother to Luffy. He encouraged Luffy and believed in him since they were young. Luffy started crying out of joy when he met Sabo again years later and embraced him. Sabo maintained his elder brother role and showed his overprotectiveness over Luffy on multiple occasions. Their bond is a sweet one as they express happiness for each other.
As an interesting individual, it is unsurprising that Sabo has allies as interesting as himself. His relationships and the theme of camaraderie make the anime more personal and relatable. Such wholesome bonds help maintain a nice aura around the anime. Additionally, it makes the anime more fun and memorable. Such consistency between friendship and family causes a sense of belonging in the anime. It fills viewers’ hearts with awe and happiness keeping them hooked to the anime.
