The Horo Horo no Mi or “Hollow-Hollow” has been hand-picked for its unique characteristics. We’re not saying that some if any look “basic,” but there are definitely some that break the mold like a bunker grenade. In the world of One Piece, when something unusual pops up, you just know it’s unusual to the anime world as a whole. Let’s dive into why the Horo Horo no Mi is so popular in the One Piece universe.
The Odd Look of The Hollow-Hollow Fruit
The Horo Horo no Mi is a pale-yellow fruit with a distinctive appearance. It features a green, T-shaped stem that curves downward at its ends. Below the stem, the fruit divides into five elongated, oblong sections that curve upward. Resembling a cluster of what appear to be ghosts. It kind of looks like a Psychic Pokemon from a certain angle. So what does this thing actually do, and who uses this Devil Fruit to move up in the Grand Line?
Horo Horo no Mi: Power Summary
The Hollow-Hollow Fruit grants its user the extraordinary ability to conjure and manipulate ghosts. These ethereal apparitions possess the unique capability to multiply themselves, creating an army of spectral entities. When these ghosts traverse through individuals, they possess the ability to sap their morale, self-esteem, and will to live. Effectively hollowing out their spirits. Additionally, these ghostly manifestations can be harnessed to establish a “Ghost Network” for surveillance. Enabling the user to discreetly observe and spy on their adversaries. We’ll expand on this shortly.
Who Is Perona in One Piece?
Perona, known as the “Ghost Princess,” previously held the position of commander over the Wild Zombies and Surprise Zombies on Thriller Bark before its downfall. She was also part of the enigmatic group referred to as the “Mysterious Four” during earlier events in the series. Her distinctive appearance includes a red crown adorned with a black cross atop her head, complemented by red lipstick and heavy black eyeliner. She sports a white, long-sleeved shirt featuring three black heart shapes, and the shirt is cropped, revealing her midriff.
Perona’s demeanor is characterized by a youthful, childlike, and somewhat immature personality. She frequently acts on her own desires and displays a sense of selfishness. Despite her playful disposition, Perona possesses unwavering confidence in her Devil Fruit abilities, firmly believing she can defeat anyone who crosses her path. This confidence remained steadfast even when she confronted the frequently feared Warlord of the Sea, Bartholomew Kuma, as she boldly declared her intent to conquer him. But what abilities give her this confidence?
How Perona Uses The Horo Horo no Mi
As previously mentioned, the abilities granted by the Hollow-Hollow Fruit, as demonstrated by Perona, have found application in both combat scenarios and intelligence-gathering missions. Perona possesses the capability to harness her Devil Fruit powers for the creation of explosive ghosts, varying in size for different tactical purposes. Furthermore, she has employed her Negative Ghosts to undermine the strength of her adversaries, providing valuable support to her allies. These applications emphasize some of the fruit’s key strengths and advantages.
Negative Hallows and Astral Projection
Perona’s primary ability involves summoning ghostly apparitions called “Negative Hollows.” These spirits take on various forms, such as cute, ghost-like creatures. Perona can control the size, number, and power of these Negative Hollows, allowing her to create a formidable army of spectral minions. These Hollows can phase through solid objects and attack opponents by entering their bodies and sapping their energy.
Also, one of the most unique aspects of the Horo Horo no Mi is its ability to allow the user to separate their spirit from their physical body. Perona can achieve astral projection, enabling her to move around freely as an intangible ghost while her physical body remains inactive. This ability grants her the advantage of invisibility and the ability to pass through barriers and obstacles effortlessly. That’s not all. There are other ways to use this coveted fruit as well.
Toku Hallow
Perona has the ability to fashion a significantly larger incarnation of her Mini Hollows, which she then affixes to her opponent by having it bite them. Subsequently, Perona can trigger a devastating explosion by executing her signature technique known as the “Kamikaze Rap,” accomplished by snapping her fingers. This explosive maneuver was initially witnessed in action during her encounter with Usopp, in addition to some other mind games.
What Are The Weaknesses Of The Horo Horo no Mi?
Aside from seawater and Haki, the user’s physical form remains susceptible to harm. If her body is injured or incapacitated, it can leave her astral projection defenseless. Also, while Perona’s abilities are versatile, they may not be as destructive as some other Devil Fruits in direct combat. She relies on a combination of ghostly attacks and psychological manipulation to defeat her opponents.
Plus, if somebody lacks faith in themselves, it appears that Perona is unable to utilize the Hallow-Hallow effectively. Once again, while facing Usopp, it became apparent that his self-doubt acted as a shield. This is similar to the Mero Mero no Mi in the sense that psychology plays a role in the Devil Fruit’s effectiveness.
The Horo Horo no Mi’s Role In The One Piece Universe
It’s clear that, like Pokemon (sorry-not-sorry about referencing it again), some powers in the One Piece universe are sort of lazy. They lack substance and lack the narrative marrow that keeps fans wanting more. The Hallow-Hallow fruit avoids this trap by adding original features to a timeless theme. Ghost abilities are commonplace, but Oda added a psychological component to the devil fruit that makes it feel fresh. Also, Perona’s personality fits perfectly with the ability. The contrast between childish and ancient somehow forms a palatable display during various maneuvers throughout the story. We cannot wait to see more.
