In our segment addressing Miss Valentine’s Kiro Kiro no Mi, we alluded to the fact that Gem and Valentine have a “Salt and Pepper” thing going on. So, it only makes sense to talk about what makes the Bomu Bomu no Mi such a blast in One Piece. Sorry. The puns have been pouring out lately. Anyway, explosions are a pretty big part of anime. At this point – if it has anything to do with adventure thematically – fans expect at least 50 to pop up in every saga. The bigger the better. Let’s talk about how this devil fruit brings this to the table.
The Power of Bomu Bomu no Mi: Making It Simple
The primary ability of the Bomu Bomu no Mi is the power to turn the user’s body into a living bomb. This means that Gem himself can explode without being harmed, which is a formidable defensive advantage. When he detonates, the explosion can range in size and intensity, depending on how much energy he puts into it. Gem can control the size of the explosion, allowing him to create smaller, controlled blasts for tactical purposes. Or massive explosions for maximum devastation. But who’s this Gem guy everyone’s talking about?
Gem of the Border: One Piece’s “Mr. 5”
Gem, previously holding the lowest rank among the officer agents of Baroque Works, was partnered with Miss Valentine. Much like the other officer agents within the organization, Gem exuded an abundance of self-assurance. He firmly believed that forming bonds with others was a display of vulnerability. Physically, Gem is a tall, dark-skinned individual with a distinctive appearance featuring short, spiky dreadlocked black hair. His attire consistently consists of a brown trench coat paired with a pink cravat. With it, he sports sunglasses without fail, irrespective of the time of day.
Gem, regrettably, possessed a propensity to overestimate his own capabilities while simultaneously underestimating the potential of his adversaries. In terms of armament, he favored a new model of the Flintlock .44 Caliber 6 Shot Revolver from South Blue. This is notable for its rapid-fire capabilities. Nevertheless, these attributes failed to significantly bolster his effectiveness. Currently, Gem has transitioned into the role of a firefighter at the recently established Spiders Cafe. Eventually, he reunited with many of his former colleagues from Baroque Works.
What Does The Bomu Bomu no Mi Even Look Like?
The Bomu Bomu no Mi bears a striking resemblance to a dark purple fruit. It’s adorned with distinctive S-shaped swirls, and crowned with a fat fuse… or stem. Its overall appearance draws a clear parallel to the iconic image of a traditional bomb, featuring a spherical black body and a stringy fuse. Like we’ve said in previous segments, some of these fruits just remind you of classic Nintendo games. Adding to this resemblance, the stem exhibits a tattered, frayed appearance, creating the illusion of a lit fuse, further enhancing its bomb-like image.
How Does Gem Use The Bomu Bomu no Mi?
Gem typically remains unperturbed in the face of explosive projectiles, fully aware that they pose no harm to him whatsoever. In some instances, he might even ingest such projectiles with the intention of confining the resulting explosion within himself, thus safeguarding his allies from harm. Some may trick him by taking advantage of this habit. Again, this feels like something Kirby would do in Super Smash.
As stated in another segment, Gem frequently engages in combat alongside Mikita, as their respective abilities tend to harmonize seamlessly. Gem’s explosions generate substantial force, which conveniently propels Mikita through the air, allowing her to leverage her own abilities to their fullest extent.
A Rather Gross Combat Move
There are a lot of ways to use this devil fruit and Gem found a way to make it nasty. Introducing Nose Fancy Cannon: a way to make explosive combat snotty. Despite Zoro’s repulsion while fighting Gem, he deploys an unexpectedly potent technique by excavating dried mucus from his nasal passages and propelling it toward the enemy. Upon contact, the expelled snot triggers a substantial explosion, demonstrating its surprising effectiveness. It’s as if that strange kid in class somehow found a way to detonate the boogers he’s collected underneath the classroom table. So yeah. Disgusting.
An Explosive Impact
In summary, the strength of the Bomu Bomu no Mi lies in its unique combination of defensive, offensive, and strategic capabilities. Gem of the Border, the user of this Devil Fruit, can explode at will without harming himself and create explosive projectiles. These abilities make him a formidable and unpredictable opponent in combat. However, like all Devil Fruits, the Bomu Bomu no Mi has its weaknesses, and its effectiveness in battle depends on the creativity and skill of its user. Nonetheless, it is clear that this Devil Fruit offers a wide range of abilities that can be harnessed for both offense and defense, making it a valuable asset in the world of One Piece.
