There have since been a few variations on the original, but the Human-Human Fruit of Tony Tony Chopper is one of the original Zoans! This One Piece staple gives the lovable Straw Hat doctor his human-like appearance, born as a reindeer before he ate the Devil Fruit. Despite the look of him though, the Human-Human Fruit is quite the strong Zoan in the hands of the right user.

What is the Human-Human Fruit?
While it’s the most basic of its Zoan model, the Human-Human Fruit still offers unique abilities. Even by the admission of One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, it’s basically a totally useless Devil Fruit unless eaten by an animal. This Devil Fruit instead gives the ability to shift into human-like forms between the original creature’s main form, allowing different ways to maximize their strength as they fight in battle. It’s a fantastic way to give any animals a huge amount of power in battle, but it also opens them up to different avenues of improvement thanks to the abilities it grants.
The Human-Human Fruit allows the user human knowledge, granting abilities like speaking and understanding human language. Much like the people it represents, animals can now walk upright and talk if they choose, adopting various forms that change their body shape or form to fit all kinds of different humans. This even allows them to grow intellectually, with some like Chopper attaining massive medical knowledge thanks to the way the Devil Fruit changes his brain. Not that he wasn’t smart before, but now he has the ability to realize his full potential.
Tony Tony Chopper
Tony Tony Chopper is the doctor for the Straw Hat Pirates, and one of the most lovable mascots in all of anime. He starts out as a blue-nosed reindeer, rejected from his herd for his strange appearance. At some point in his young life, he accidentally eats the Human-Human Fruit, leading to further exile from his kind. Unable to control the transformations yet, he was stuck in Heavy Point and seen as a monster by all who lived in Drum Kingdom. Although there was one who saw the young reindeer boy for who he really was, and took him under his wing as a doctor.
Eventually, Chopper grows up, learning through the death of Hiriluk and the further terror of Wapol that he has to stand up and be brave. He uses the Human-Human Fruit and his medical knowledge to help the Straw Hats now, saving Luffy and others from terrible injuries. Whether it’s from their own stupidity or an intense fight, Chopper is the one that will always fix up anyone on the battlefield, friend, or enemy. He’s incredibly dedicated to his friends, and with them plans to become the best doctor in the world, capable of curing any disease.
Human Capabilities
The Human-Human Fruit’s basic model changes Chopper into a human reindeer, including all the characteristics of being a human. He turns into a bipedal creature, walking on two legs when he’s not in one of his more deer-like forms. It also grants him a change in his brain, making it more human-like and capable of learning on a human level. This allows Chopper to study medicine, learning all he can about advanced science and diseases throughout the world. Although it takes a little while considering who his first teacher is. The other impact of the Human-Human Fruit is more profound though.
Changes in the brain render the Human-Human Fruit user capable of human speech. It’s unknown if they have some default language from birth, but they’re usually able to speak and comprehend just as any person would. Although he gains the ability to speak to humans like this, Chopper still retains his other abilities to talk to animals as well. This helps him be the liaison for the Straw Hat Pirates when they have to work with animals like the karate dugongs or Eyelashes. It’s definitely a good power to have if they ever have a failure in communication.
Form Changes
It’s unknown if another user of the Human-Human Fruit would be able to attain this, but considering we’ve only seen Chopper, we have to assume. With the way the Human-Human Fruit lets the user change their bodies to fit any human form, Chopper makes up all kinds of different fighting specialties. These changes, called Form Points, help aid him in battle by diverting the strength to human limbs, focusing on things like leg strength in Jump Point. Others, like Muscle Point focus on being even bigger than the enemy, attacking with pure strength instead. Meanwhile, Run Point turns him back into his regular reindeer form, allowing for huge speed boosts.
Others can utilize his reindeer characteristics as well as the human ones. Chopper grows out his antlers in Horn Point, using them as a battering ram or shovel to dig holes and tunnels. Even more, Chopper eventually learns what seems to be a partial Awakening of the Devil Fruit with Monster Point. It makes him into a massive beast, almost resembling images of the Wendigo from Native American folklore. A fearsome sight, Monster Point was at one time more monster than human, but Chopper has since learned to control it. Now, Monster Point has Chopper totally in control, able to speak and act independently without a blind rage.
Strengths
The real strength of the Human-Human Fruit lies in the versatility of the animal that eats it. With someone like Chopper, who has an analytical brain that’s always looking to improve and help, it’s nearly limitless. As long as he keeps thinking about new forms to create, like Kung Fu Point which allows rapid form changes focusing on offense, he just gets stronger. Right now though, the real strength lies in just how much the Human-Human Fruit allows the user to learn, leading to even more understanding of their own body.
With Chopper’s ability to change form and size, he’s able to quickly get through areas the other Straw Hats couldn’t. Small spaces are nothing to him, meanwhile, he can grow massive in Heavy Point to lift or throw his comrades in battle. It’s an all-around diverse Devil Fruit that allows adaptation over everything else, meaning the user is constantly evolving. Just like humanity, the ability to adapt and evolve is the Human-Human Fruit’s greatest gift to the user.
Weaknesses
As with all Devil Fruits, the biggest weakness of the Human-Human Fruit is water. in addition, it’s only as strong as the individual who eats it, depending on how far they can push their boundaries. In Chopper’s case, even though he can become strong in Monster Point, he’s more limited by his own mindset. The Human-Human Fruit won’t automatically turn the user into a great warrior, but instead adapt the abilities of whoever eats it. Changing to become the best human they can be by the time they learn how to use their powers.
The other major disadvantage is that the Human-Human Fruit, without Chopper’s specialized forms, is absolutely useless in battle off the bat. Especially if a more useless animal eats it, like some small bug or a harmless mouse. Most who do eat it just end up as a more advanced version of a Mink though, and it’s only natural Chopper falls into their society so well.
What Happens if a Human Eats the Human-Human Fruit?
Absolutely nothing per One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. It’s probably one of the cruelest jokes in One Piece, considering a Devil Fruit is only known to the user after they eat it. Before that, without any kind of guide to the look and names of the Devil Fruit, it’s a complete shot in the dark on what the future user may be eating. That means some poor sap could end up eating the Human-Human Fruit, even if they’re already a normal human, and they’ll know immediately that they goofed. If a regular human chows down on the Human-Human Fruit, it just becomes a regular human who can’t swim.
It’s definitely one of the most basic Zoans in the series, but without it, we wouldn’t have the beloved Chopper. The Devil Fruit of the Straw Hat doctor keeps him able to serve the crew with any medical need. Thanks to the constantly evolving knowledge he’s able to take in, Chopper becomes the smartest reindeer in the Grand Line by the time they reach Wano, and is only improving. The Human-Human Fruit might not be overpowered when it comes to Devil Fruits overall, but it does hold a damn special place in One Piece lore.
