One of the first Zoan Type Devil Fruits to come into play in the series of One Piece. The Human-Human Fruit held by Tony Tony Chopper, is incredibly diverse for one that’s just supposed to make their user a regular human. Is there more than meets the eye to this Devil Fruit, but what secrets does it hold that we don’t know yet?
This article contains spoilers for One Piece through chapter 1098. If not caught up, check it out on MangaPlus and Viz to avoid being spoiled!
What is the Human Human Fruit?
The Human-Human Fruit, which Chopper eats as a young reindeer, is quite the diverse Devil Fruit. It looks almost like a regular mushroom, though it has the characteristic swirls of Devil Fruits on it as well. When he finds it, Chopper actually confuses it for just a normal mushroom, eating the entire thing despite the terrible taste. This brings the Human-Human Fruit to life, turning Chopper into a reindeer human that can now walk, talk, and act just like us.
This Devil Fruit is a particular type of Zoan though, and only works on animals or objects. Whatever eats it gains any kind of human characteristic like speech, intelligence, and communication abilities like reading and writing. In addition, animals that eat the Fruit still maintain their communication abilities with animals, able to translate and act as a mediator between them and humans. This comes in handy for the Straw Hats on more than one occasion, as Chopper can get info from animals everyone else ignores. Through the power of the Human-Human Fruit, Chopper is also able to take on many different forms for battle.
Walk Point
The main point that Chopper uses his Human-Human Fruit when the Straw Hats need to travel long distances. This is also the version he first shows up in while pulling Kureha’s sleigh. Still a hybrid form of the Human-Human Zoan, it looks most similar to the regular reindeer form, and allows him extra endurance and speed on long walks thanks to four legs instead of two.
After the time skip, this form doesn’t see a whole lot of use. Then again, there isn’t much on-foot travel to do in any of the islands the Straw Hats hit. This is usually the form that Chopper moves into if he needs to run away quickly, and really emphasizes the speed of the Zoan Fruit.
Brain Point
Thankfully the Human-Human Fruit grants ridiculous intelligence to the animal that eats it. This form is Chopper’s base, which emphasizes the ridiculous brainpower he holds. When at this point, he’s focusing one hundred percent of his Human-Human Fruit on knowledge and studying, or learning about enemies. Brain Point is also the form that Chopper does most of his doctoring in, thanks to the boost it allows in his thinking and deduction powers.
Like others, Brain Point is enhanced by the use of the Rumble Ball. Chopper, when using one, will go into Brain Point and use the enhanced brainpower from the Rumble Ball to analyze his enemies. This allows him to find a weakness to them, though at first, it makes Luffy think he’s about to let a major blast of energy loose like the typical Shonen hero.
Heavy Point
So far Chopper’s points have been relatively cute or just like a normal reindeer. Nope, Heavy Point turns him into a massive, brutish hulk of a reindeer. He’s incredibly strong in this form, and towers over even Jimbei with his massive size. It’s also his main form of fighting before the time skip, and he can punch right through most obstacles with relative ease when he wants to.
Heavy Point is still one of his most used forms in the series post-time skip. He’s much stronger now than he was before too, fully mastering most of the point forms including Heavy Point. Now, it enhances the strength of the Human-Human Fruit massively in order to keep the Straw Hats safe and healthy. This form is also often used to help load up the Thousand Sunny for long journeys, or just carry anything the others don’t want to.
Horn Point
One of Chopper’s more offense-focused forms, Horn Point is, before the time skip, probably one of the most dangerous regular forms he has. Pre-time skip he uses this in a Walk Point-looking form where he’s down on all four legs, and his horns grow massive, with multiple sharp tips on them. This is one of the most versatile forms for Chopper, and gives him a great boost to his speed as well as attack with his stabbing horns.
After the time skip, Horn Point takes on a more humanoid appearance. Chopper now is bipedal in this form, and his horns are now long and curled, great for battering enemies or tossing them into the air. It still gives him a great boost in speed and attack, but now allows him to be more nimble and evade attacks thanks to the smaller size now.
Guard Point
One form that stays the same throughout the story, with no change between the two-year gap. Guard Point is one of Chopper’s most useful, and one that comes out a lot when it comes to protecting himself or his friends. This form utilizes more of the animal side of Chopper, immediately puffing out his fur to create the equivalent of a massive fuzzball with horns. The Human-Human Fruit doesn’t really make itself evident here.
That said, this point brings out the true beauty of the Human-Human Fruit. While it takes an animal or object and gives them human form and intelligence, it will still make use of their natural features to enhance the user. Guard Point only improves after the time-skip though, and Chopper’s incredible cloud of fur is even larger than before.
Kung Fu Point
The new form that Chopper unveils after the time skip, Kung Fu Point also becomes his default battle form. Whether that’s for better or worse is anyone’s guess, but Kung Fu Point allows Chopper to rapidly attack his enemies. It turns him into a massive reindeer, with the defensive abilities of Guard Point and the attack capabilities of Heavy Point. In addition, he can often switch quickly into other forms with the help of a Rumble Ball while returning to Kung Fu Point rapidly.
Chopper primarily uses this form for battles after the time skip, and is able to put up one hell of a fight against even some of the toughest foes in Fishman Island and Punk Hazard. He holds up in Kung Fu Point as one of his best forms to balance attack and defense using the Human-Human Fruit.
Jump Point
It looks just like it sounds, but Jump Point is pretty much left behind after the time skip. This form focuses all human strength of the Human-Human Fruit into just his lower torso. Chopper looks like he never skips leg day in his life with this form, and is able to take massive leaps that can easily clear massive trees. Of course, along with the huge boost to his aerial ability, Chopper also gets a major boost to his speed.
After the time skip, Chopper does still have the Jump Point ability, but mostly incorporates it into Horn Point now. This way he’s able to use the Human-Human Fruit to fuller extents than before with a better attack and defense ratio that is faster than Kung Fu Point.
Arm Point
Jump Point might look like Chopper never skips leg day, and Arm Point is the one where every day is arm day. Chopper takes the Human-Human Fruit and gets jacked, looking like an Olympic bodybuilder with the scrawniest legs possible. This gives him a major advantage for attacks in the pre-time skip though, and is the main form for many of his major attacks. Cloven Rose and many others are some of Chopper’s favorite finishers in the early series.
After the time skips, Arm Point is mostly incorporated into Horn Point and Kung Fu Point just like the others. Chopper, with more mastery of the Human-Human Fruit after the two years of training, is able to more rapidly switch between several forms so Arm Point rarely sees use anymore. Still, he’ll pull it out from time to time and give someone a good Cloven Cross to bring them to their senses.
Monster Point
The most dangerous form that Chopper has is this hulking abomination. It takes the Human-Human Fruit to, literally, the most monstrous point that it can. Monster Point is massive, towering over even Chopper’s Heavy Point in comparison. It greatly outweighs even Franky and Jimbei. The unfortunate part of Monster Point pre-time skip is that it makes Chopper lose any semblance of his mind. Instead, it turns him into a rage machine, attacking whatever is near.
After the time skip Monster Point is much more adorable than before, with Chopper making incredible improvements. Now, he can enter Monster Point with only one Rumble Ball, and is able to keep a clear mind while doing it. Even more, he has a relatively short cooldown time between uses now, though he does have some limits on how many times a day he can use them.
Performance Enhancement
Thanks to the massive intelligence granted by his Brain Point form, Chopper is able to exploit the Human-Human Fruit more. Though it definitely is helped along by his immense medical knowledge. With it, he formulates a drug that can initially allow him to rapidly switch between the multiple special Points. These Rumble Balls usually give him a boost in power for a limited time, though the effects diminish with each successive one he takes before the time skip. After he improves his abilities and understands the Human-Human Fruit more,, he improves the formulation drastically.
Now it only takes one Rumble Ball for Chopper to reach Monster Point, while he can access every other form at will. It’s one of the greatest powers of the Human-Human Fruit so far, and makes him an incredible asset in battle and out.
Weaknesses
The Human-Human Fruit has the typical Devil Fruit weakness to water, as all do. That said, the real weakness lies in it being a Zoan Fruit of a regular human. If any normal person eats it, according to creator Eiichiro Oda, they simply lose their ability to swim. No cool powers, no benefits at all. Really kind of a bummer too if whoever finds it doesn’t know what the Devil Fruits look like, because they won’t know what the Fruit is until eaten.
Tony Tony Chopper is the best doctor for the Straw Hats thanks to the Human-Human Fruit, and holds his own in battle. Thanks to this special Zoan, the Straw Hat Pirates are at the best they’ve ever been, and can come back from any fight. It’s just one of many special Zoans in the One Piece universe, but the Human-Human Fruit grants a power uniquely… human.
