The New World of One Piece is the most dangerous place in all the seas, but what makes it that way? A stretch of sea that spans half the globe, the New World makes up the second half of the Grand Line. This is the point where most pirates either turn back or die, as the New World is where One Piece kicks into another level of danger.
Fair warning, this article will contain spoilers for One Piece up to the current manga chapter, 1089. So, that will be the only warning to turn back or face spoilers!
How to Enter The New World
There are many ways to enter the New World, but only a couple of ways to enter it alive. Even then, the journey there can be dangerous depending on the ones trying to get in. The Grand Line is split in half by the Red Line at Sabaody Archipelago, which also hosts a lift to the top of the Red Line. This lift will bring those approved by the Celestial Dragons and Navy, along with any ships or transportation, to the top for descending to the other side.
That’s only for those that get approval though, and it’s not something easy to do for most people, much less pirates. Thankfully there’s another route for those brave enough to undertake the journey. With a special coating for ships or a suitable submersible like Law’s Polar Tang, pirates can dive under the Grand Line. It’s a treacherous journey, and many don’t make it alive.
Upgraded Log Pose
The first difference many notice, when they reach the New World, is that their Log Pose is useless. A normal Log Pose from the Grand Line will simply spin aimlessly, unable to fixate on one direction. The new Log Poses to navigate the New World have three separate arrows inside. At least these give sailors an option of where to go. Each one will point to a different island available from there, with all converging by the end.
Why Is It Called The New World?
For much the same reason that explorers long ago called unexplored areas the New World. There’s much still to discover in the oceans between islands, and some that aren’t on any map. Despite the large Navy presence in the Grand Line’s first half, the New World is relatively barren of them other than the G-5 Base. This leads to a perception from most as a lawless land run by pirates.
Who Rules The New World?
Those that believe that pirates run the New World aren’t wrong, as it’s all territory of the Four Emperors. These four powerful pirates control swathes of land across the New World, frequently clashing with each other for whatever reason. Before the events of Marineford, the New World is ran by Shanks, Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido. After the battle at Marineford and Whitebeard’s death, Blackbeard takes his place. The most recent iteration of the Four Emperors after the Wano arc consists of Luffy, Shanks, Blackbeard, and… Buggy the Clown.
Stranger Weather
Weather on the Grand Line was already a disaster to go through, but the New World ups the stakes hard. While nobody knows why, areas of Totto Land have seas made from maple syrup and cotton candy snow. It’s wildly strange, but seas of jelly and icing are nothing compared to the dangerous shores of Wano. Maybe shores is the wrong word, as Wano is actually up on massive cliffs over crashing waves and whirlpools. A general rule of the New World- anything, anywhere, can bring death at any time.
Where is Laughtale?
When Gold Roger faces execution at Loguetown, he proclaims his treasure is at the end of the Grand Line. The thing is, the three islands at the end of the New World aren’t what he’s talking about. The final island of the Grand Line, Laughtale, is only discoverable with the four Road Poneglyphs hidden throughout the Grand Line. It’s these that hold the coordinates to the island, and in turn, the One Piece.
This is where most of the major players in One Piece are on the way to right now. With the New World in turmoil, each Emperor after their own goal, and mysteries still running amok about the World Government the fuse is running short. The New World is about to ignite and promises an explosive ending to One Piece.
