While queens are usually female and elegant, One Piece’s Queen is quite different. First of all, Queen the Plague is a man and is also a pirate. How ironic is his name? Well, the irony does not end there. He has a robust figure that is complimented by a set of small legs that suffer under his enormous weight. He may not be pretty, but he’s a pretty formidable opponent to go up against. Queen is a dependable man and a redoubtable warrior. He is, in fact, one of the three All-Stars of the Beast Pirates and a close confidant of Kaidou. As you continue reading this article, you will find out just how dependable and daunting he can be.
Who is Queen?
Earlier on, we mentioned Queen is one of Kaido’s All-Stars, but who are the All-Stars? The All-Stars are pirates whom Kaidou himself handpicked to be his right-handmen. They are three in number, and they include Jack the Drought, King the Conflagration, and, of course, Queen the Plague. Queen is a major antagonist in the Wano Country Arc, and he has a bounty of 1,320,000,000 Berries. A ridiculous amount that indicates his struggle and his commendable strength. Queen likes to see himself as a sort of entertainer with his classic songs and dances, which he uses to rally his teammates. It’s all fun and games until Queen pulls out his big guns—biological weapons. He is called Queen of the Plague for a reason. This is because he is known to use biological weapons to harm and torture his enemies.
Surprisingly, Queen was also a scientist. He worked at MADS, a research institute led by Vegapunk. As a matter of fact, he claims to be superior to Doctor Vegapunk, but we all know the truth. He has a cybernetic arm and prides himself on his cybernetic modulations and modifications. Queen is not modest; he really isn’t. He is an extremely arrogant individual who prides himself on being someone who uses his viruses to hurt people, even his own subordinates. He believes that the Beast Pirates are the strongest crew under the sun. Queen also considers his Waiter and Pleasure members to be considerably dead weight and disposable toilet sheets due to their lack of artificial Zoan devil fruits. Sadistic does not begin to describe his obsession with blood sports and executions that are considered unwinnable. Queen was the ruler of Udon, not by legal right anyway.
Oshiruko is Never Too Much.
Queen is a selfish glutton. He considers his favorite meal, Oshiruko, as important as the breath in his nostrils. In his defense, the meal is just too delicious. It is too delicious to be shared with anyone, not even Big Mom. It’s almost inspiring how his love for Oshiruko is so deep and immense. The only little and minute downside is that he can get murderous or, worse, agitated if he does not get his daily dose of his wonderful not-to-be-shared Oshiruko.
In chapter 937 of the One Piece manga, Queen is seen snacking on a couple of bowls (many bowls) of Oshikuro when spectating the Sumo Inferno, which is held in the Prisoners Mine in Udon. The Sumo Inferno is a special event curated by Queen to execute Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist in One Piece, and Hyogoro, an inmate of the Prisoner Mines and a former Yakuza boss.
Toxic Camaraderie
Queen shares a complex relationship with his fellow All-Stars, regardless of his casual standing with Kaidou. The standard jabs he throws at King simply signify their rivalry. At the very least, they have one thing in common. A beautiful symphony that allures them to a mutual understanding. A common disdain for their fellow All-Star, Jack the Drought. Queen is seen verbally abusing Jack in tandem with King. In that regard, Queen has a sizable amount of disdain for Jack, in spite of his cruel personality. Although Queen is not one to admit it, he has huge faith and trust in the All-Stars compared to his other subordinates. Do not even get us started on the Pleasures and Waiters; he may consider them below the bottom of the barrel.
The Power of the Ryu Ryu No Mi
The Ryu Ryu No Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus, is an ancient Zoan-type devil fruit. This devil fruit was eaten by Queen the Plague, and it grants him the ability to transform into a full brachiosaurus dinosaur or a more human-hybrid brachiosaurus. In addition to his artificially created viruses and cybernetic arm, going up against him is going to take more than willpower. Queen is able to use multiple attacks with his robotic arm to shoot unfriendly beams at his enemies. He also has increased durability due to the power of his devil fruit, which grants him a boost to his overall physical ability.
Upon transformation, Queen’s height increases tremendously to create a towering and overwhelming presence. He is much bigger than characters like Emperor Big Mom, who are already huge in size. There are a lot of tactical ways he applies his devil-fruit powers in battle to create the best possible chance of winning. He is able to elongate his neck, his ponytail hair, and his tail. This increases his range and gives him more options in close-quarter battles. He can pretty much headbutt opponents in the cheek unexpectedly. This gives him a sort of hidden card ability that first-time opponents are unaware of. Conversely, he can integrate his premium shooting ability using the robotics in his cybernetic components. With increased durability, increased physical strength, massive size, effective robotic compartments, electric abilities, an extendable body, and the ability to shoot dangerous beams, he has many tricks up his sleeve.
Ruler of Udon
Queen was the de facto ruler of Udon, a region in the Wano Country. Udon is located in the southeast region. Initially, the region was governed by the Uzuki family before the Beast Pirates took over, or rather, removed them, and Queen was placed in charge of the operations in Udon. Being an innovative, career-minded individual, Queen transformed and industrialized the region to create weapons. He oversaw the operations in the prisoner mines. He worked the laborers and lower class to exhaustion and, at times, death, typically. Slavery is basically recreation compared to what these people are doing down there at Udon. Before the takeover, Udon was a very thick forest. But all that got burned during the battle between the Beast Pirates and Kozuki Oden. How nice of them to clear the vegetation!
The Self-Acclaimed Scientist
Queen is a lover of weapons and artificial viruses. He is a talented scientist and an intelligent inventor. Queen even modified himself to possess abilities just like the Vinsmoke family of modified humans. He pats himself on the back for preparing torture machines to rough-hand the Beast Pirates’ enemies to collect important information or, more importantly, for a couple of laughs. His abilities with machines and robotics are a testament to his affiliation with MADS. They sought new scientific discoveries and developed machines.
Queen has several cybernetic enhancements that he employs in conjunction with his devil fruit powers, which make him a formidable threat. Some of these tactical enhancements include mechanical claws, which he uses to grab his opponents and slam them into the nearest concrete; laser beams, but not the ‘tiu tiu’ kind—the kind that packs a punch; rocket launchers to liven up the atmosphere; and an extendable head to tail for uncomfortable hugs.
Wano Country Arc
The Wano Country arc is very broad, and a lot of things went down during the arc. Queen played a huge role as the antagonist in the arc and fought a couple of battles. He fought alongside King and fought members of Luffy’s crew as well. In the Prisoner Mines in Udon, a performance was brewing. Queen is an entertainer, and he displayed his abilities with his funky songs and dance moves. He is informed by the warden, Babanuki, about the series of events that are taking place in the prisoner mines. One of those events was Luffy’s escape attempt. He brings Luffy and Hyogoro to participate in a not-so-fun event called the ‘Sumo Inferno.’ While the name ‘Sumo Inferno’ sounds cool, its cruel reality involves Luffy and Hyogoro engaging the Beast Pirates in a sumo match with their lives on the line.
They also have collars attached to their necks that would kill them if they moved out of the ring. The event is scheduled to be held the next morning. But it is not a bright and happy morning for Queen, as he is informed about the death of Komurasaki, a girl he has been infatuated with for a while, leaving him in utter disbelief. A new visitor arrives: Big Mom, also known as Charlotte Linlin, the leader of the Big Mom pirates and one of the former emperors ruling the new world. An esteemed guest, as such, is greeted with niceties right until she inquires about Oshiruko. This does not sit well with Queen as he gets agitated and distraught. He transforms and gets ready for a confrontation, much to Big Mom’s surprise. He launches an attack but is slammed into the ground by Big Mom.
Queen vs. Tony Tony Chopper
Queen is not very fond of Chopper, mainly because of his ability to neutralize his viral weapons. He sees Chopper as a low-rate doctor for Luffy’s crew. Queen’s self-proclaimed best work in terms of viruses is The Ice Oni. The Ice Oni is an artificial virus that makes its victims enter a wild state with a loss of reasoning. The good news is that their physical prowess and abilities are heightened. The sad news is that they can be super for only an hour before the virus makes good use of their bodies. The virus is easily transmissible through contact, and the only assumed cure is in the possession of the developer himself, Queen. At one point, Chopper and some others get infected, and he has little time to find the cure.
He realizes that heat is able to suppress the action of the virus, which makes sense because ice and heat are natural enemies. Marco, a close confidant of Whitebeard, the leader of the Whitebeard Pirates, is all too happy to provide the heat with his phoenix powers. Eventually, Chopper comes up with a cure and cures all the victims. This makes Queen livid. Chopper barks his distaste for Queen’s weaponization of viruses, explaining that humans cannot properly control viruses. They both confront themselves as Chopper transforms and slaps some sense into Queen, who has been calling him a raccoon, and corrects him that he is a reindeer. Despite the beautiful slap fans enjoyed, Queen proved to be too much for Chopper to handle, even in his monster form. But he did well in holding him off until Sanji’s arrival.
Queen vs. Sanji
The altercation between Sanji and Queen is filled with emotions, and fans cannot forget the wonderful battle between them. Truth be told, Sanji had a troubling childhood. He has an understandable disdain for his birth father, who did not treat him right. The plot intertwines when Queen informs him that his father, Vinsmoke Judge, was indeed his colleague back at MADS. Sanji’s fighting style involves engulfing his feet with flames, which gives him untampered speed and boosted physicality. Queen assumes this ability is a result of the modifications made by Judge, his father. Queen calls Sanji ‘Judge’s son’, and Sanji is not happy to hear those words. He dislikes his father and does not want to hear it at all. Queen, on the other hand, seems to have rivalry issues with Sanji’s father, and the truth is that Sanji could care less.
Queen claims to be eager to use the duplicated abilities of Vinsmoke Judge’s children to prove he is a superior scientist compared to Sanji’s father. The battle begins, and Sanji makes the first move. He dashes towards Queen and throws a kick, but Queen, unfazed, blocks with his blade and attempts to counter with his extended tail. Sanji manages to evade and rains down a barrage of kicks, pushing Queen backward but not dealing significant damage. Queen decides to shoot a huge, unexpected beam towards Sanji, which he misses owing to Sanji’s incredible speed. Sanji charges up his attack and lands a huge kick to Queen’s abdomen, and it connects, dealing considerable damage. Queen gets up, shoots his head towards Sanji, and wraps him up like a snake. The remaining half of his body started shooting rocket launchers in their direction, freeing Sanji unintentionally.
Queen vs. Sanji, Part II
After getting strangled by Queen’s snake attack, Sanji gets up, looking like the zigzag on a zebra crossing. He snapped his neck back in place and started beating up his body back to shape. His body has become fully awakened at this point, but unlike his brothers, he still has his emotions in check. Still in shock, Queen takes advantage of the opening created and uses his huge sword to slice Sanji in the neck, but the sword breaks off. His body has become so hard that the force of the sword does not leave a scratch on him. Queen starts shooting multiple beams in Sanji’s direction, and Sanji starts sprinting to find cover. Queen then starts to display each and every one of the powers his brothers possess in his own modified way. Sanji keeps up with some of the attacks but gets caught in a couple of attacks.
Queen grabs him with his robotic arm and slams him through the walls, but Sanji had enough of all that to burst out with his flames and break his arm. Sanji begins to charge his next attack and kicks him a couple of rooms behind. Queen copies Sanji’s raid suit ability and becomes invisible. During the battle, the unexpected happened. A mouse pops out of nowhere, and someone—a girl he tried to woo but lied that she was ill—comes out to get the pet mouse. This immediately blows the lid off of Queen’s patience, and this creates an opportunity for Sanji. Sanji gets into his pose and spins fast, and the color of his flames turns blue. He calls his new-found ability Ifrit Jambe. This pivotal moment in the battle totally turns the table on Queen as Sanji proceeds to whack him like a little child.
Queen and King vs. Marco
Marco faced off against King the Conflagration and Queen the Plague for a number of reasons. Marco is affiliated with the Whitebeard Pirates and seeks to take down Yonko Kaidou and his crew. He was part of the straw hat alliance, and their altercation was a result of the alliance’s mission. The king and queen are formidable opponents individually. Their combined effort yields even greater formidability. Marco managed to hold his own, but taking both of them on at the same time was a great challenge, and it greatly affected his stamina. When the battle begins, March shoots out a heatwave he calls ‘Phoenix Brand’ which connects and damages Queen.
Queen retaliates by shooting out a large beam from his mouth, but Marco evades and flies upward, where he is accosted by King’s downward slash, which he also evades before reaching a safe distance. King, who is still flying and soaring, is met by Marco’s ‘Blue Bird’ that sends him flying into a nice rooftop, where he takes significant damage. It did not end there. Marco does a couple of flips, flies down towards the sitting duck-king, and scores extra points of damage. Queen arrives to back up his fellow All-Star but is met with a devastating kick to the abdomen, which sends him flying a couple of meters in almost an instant. As the battle proceeds, Marco reveals that his aim is to stall them and that fighting them simultaneously is draining his stamina.
Admiral Ryokugu vs. Queen and the Beast Pirates
This altercation between the Admiral and the Beast Pirates is a significant moment in the Wano Country Arc. Admiral Ryokugu’s aim was to weaken Kaidou’s forces drastically, and he did that with a minimum of fuss. He wanted to overthrow the tyrannical Yonko Kaidou, and he displayed his incredible strength by defeating a sizable number of members of the Beast Pirates. His plat-based abilities allowed him to suck and drain the crew’s life force, further emphasizing his superiority and immeasurable threat. As a marine, Ryokugu seeks justice to maintain order and save innocent lives. Ryokugu arrives at the scene in a flashy style, ready to make quick work out of his enemies. And boy, was he quick.
The weakened King and Queen, along with the fellow members of the Beast Pirates, showed great resolve, as Queen was the first to launch an attack. He launches a heavy energy beam, but Ryokugu dodges with ease. The beam does great damage to the topography behind him. This takes a lot out of Queen, as he is already out of stamina. Ryokugu begins his counterattack and extends branches from his hands, but both Queen and King manage to evade them easily. But Queen is met with a sharp root that pierces his abdomen from behind. King eventually meets a similar fate. With the downfall of the crew already imminent, Ryokugu begins to suck out the juice from the bodies of both King and Queen, having already sucked out the life force of members of the Beast Pirates.
